MNAC, the national museum on Montjuïc

The Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya fills the 1929 exhibition palace at the foot of Montjuïc. Its Romanesque collection, moved stone by stone from Pyrenean churches, is one of the finest anywhere.

The Romanesque no one else has

Complete eleventh and twelfth-century frescoes from Pyrenean churches, mounted inside reproductions of each church interior. It is the room people cross Europe for.

Gothic to the twentieth century

The Gothic floor explains merchant Barcelona, and the modern circuit adds the great Catalan names through the noucentisme. A full afternoon if you love art.

The staircase bonus

The palace steps offer one of the best views in the city: the avenue down to Catalunya square and the Eixample rooftops. At sunset it becomes the best moment of the day.
